I am actually looking forward to the holidays this year! Last year, I felt so rushed and stressed and while trying to stay intentional with my decorating, I may have gone slightly overboard. Does anyone else love decorating for the holidays too? The holiday season, with its festive cheer and joyful gatherings, can also bring a sense of overwhelm. From gift shopping to event planning, it’s easy to feel the pressure mounting. Fear not! I’m sharing with you my top 6 practical tips to help you manage holiday overwhelm, keep your mental health and mindset in a positive place, and ensure a more relaxed and enjoyable holiday season!
#1 Tip To Manage Holiday Overwhelm: Get Clear On Your Vision of Your Intentional Holiday Season
You get to determine why, how, what, and when your holiday season so focus on what matters most to you. Reflect on the true meaning of the holidays and focus on what matters most to you. Whether it’s spending quality time with loved ones, expressing gratitude, or engaging in meaningful traditions, centering your holiday activities around your values can bring a sense of purpose and fulfillment. Once you have a clear vision of your intentional holiday season, the holiday overwhelm will melt away. Plus, all of these other ideas will be so easy for you to complete!
#2: Create Realistic Expectations, A Schedule & A Budget
It’s easy during the holidays to overcommit and under-deliver in all of the ways. So to be obvious, avoid the trap of overcommitting. Create a realistic schedule that allows for downtime and prevents burnout and holiday overwhelm. Be selective about the events and activities you participate in, focusing on those that bring you the most joy. Next, make a strict, realistic budget for yourself. Set a firm budget that won’t leave you out of pocket and commit to sticking to it so that your spending doesn’t run away from you. Let go of perfectionism and set realistic expectations for yourself. Understand that not everything has to be flawless, and it’s okay if plans don’t go exactly as intended. This will lead to a simplified holiday season. Embrace the imperfections as it’s part of the holiday charm!
#3: Enforce boundaries and say “no”
It is okay to say no. If you’re feeling the holiday overwhelm and don’t want to attend an event, or there’s a person you don’t really want to spend time with, don’t feel guilty for saying “no”. Christmas doesn’t eradicate boundaries. Setting boundaries is crucial for maintaining your mental and emotional well-being. It’s all about protecting your energy. Set clear boundaries for yourself and communicate them to others. Take time for yourself and just chill in between celebrations this festive period. Personally, I recommend that you watch a cheesy festive (*Hallmark Christmas*) movie, eat some pumpkin pie (or chocolate meringue), or do something un-Christmassy to protect your energy. Make sure to recharge your social batteries, especially if you’re an introvert like me!
#4: Prioritize Your Self-Care
In the midst of holiday preparations, don’t forget to prioritize self-care. Take time for yourself, whether it’s through a quiet moment with a cup of tea, a brisk walk, or indulging in a favorite hobby. While taking some time for yourself, you can practice mindfulness to stay present and grounded. Whether you like to deep breathe or meditate, becoming mindful can help alleviate stress and bring a sense of calm. Also, remember to stay active! Physical activity is a powerful stress reliever. Incorporate regular exercise into your routine to boost your mood and energy levels. Recharging your own batteries will equip you to manhandle holiday overwhelm. Lastly, try journaling and practicing affirmations to add to your positive holiday season!
#5: Become intentional with but fully take advantage of technology
When Black Friday comes, it seems like December 1st is just around the corner. I recommend that you become intentional and fully take advantage of technology. When October 1st hits, leverage technology to streamline holiday tasks and prevents holiday overwhelm. Online shopping, virtual gatherings, and digital planning tools can save time and energy, making it easier to manage the holiday to-do list. Examples of holiday tasks: Plan out presents, events, and celebrations on a checklist, etc. I always find that planning out Christmas gifts and celebrations in advance helps alleviate the pressure running up to Christmas day so that you can actually enjoy the festive period.
Second, make sure to delegate tasks. You don’t have to do it all! And you sure as heck don’t have to do it all alone. Delegate tasks to family members or friends, whether it’s preparing a meal, decorating, or organizing an event. Sharing the load not only lightens your burden but also fosters a sense of togetherness during the holidays and alleviates holiday overwhelm for the whole family!
#6: Final Tip to Managing Holiday Overwhelm: Enjoy the spirit of the season!
When October hits, it’s the holiday season! I enjoy all things Fall and start to think about Halloween, then immediately moving into Thanksgiving, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade, and then all things Christmas and New Year’s. So before Black Friday comes, remember to buy presents in advance and wrap them as you go. I start buying gifts in October! Wrapping as you go also prevents you from having a mountain to wrap on Christmas Eve. Second, I know that it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle. But it’s important that we slow down to really enjoy our holiday season. So, it’s okay to reflect and re-assess. Periodically reflect on your holiday plans and make adjustments as needed. If certain activities or traditions are causing more stress than joy, don’t hesitate to reassess and modify your plans. Flexibility is key to a more relaxed and enjoyable holiday season. Drink hot cocoa, cozy up next to the fire under a cute throw blanket, and sing a Christmas carol.
In conclusion to managing holiday overwhelm,
By implementing these 6 tips, you can navigate the holiday season with greater ease and find moments of joy amid the hustle and bustle. Remember, it’s not about perfection but about creating meaningful experiences and treasured memories. Wishing you a joyful and holiday overwhelm free season!
