“A Whole Is The Sum Of Its Parts”
Aren’t we living in some strange times? Now more than ever, our homes have become real sanctuaries. We are mostly working, studying, and learning from home. We are entertaining ourselves from home and using spaces within our homes in ways we never had or have had to before. What better way to motivate ourselves than embrace this very specific design and décor trend called Holistic Interior Design? Minimalism, essentialism, decluttering/tidying; while I love talking about all of these ideas, most of them are considered design trends. I like to think of each of these as a part of a whole that makes a space that looks good, functions well, and actually makes you healthier. In this blog post, I am sharing with you how to get started creating a holistic home so let’s dive in!
What is Holistic Interior Design?
Holistic interior design considers and creates for the whole person (mind, body, spirit), rather than the space’s form and function alone. The holistic interior design taps into your soul and creates the environment you need as a person to feel safe, comfortable, and healthy in your home. For as long as I can remember, the focus has been on how your home looks and how your home functions. Aesthetics and function were an “either you can have one but not the other.” Frankly, I don’t see how that makes sense. Both are as important as long they co-exist well within the dweller’s home. It’s less to do with the latest look or “trend” and more to do with the direct connection between how we live and feel within our homes.
“Holistic interior design lifts your spirit and nurtures your soul. It is an energy-based approach to design, that focuses on your psychological and spiritual well-being in order to restore balance and harmony within all aspects of your life.“
It’s a Holistic Process
Many of us are guilty of planning a room based on trends. We choose furniture, accessories, or paint colors that don’t necessarily speak to us. We’re trying to “keep up with the Jones” without considering whether the furniture suits the size or layout of the room and even our lifestyle.
Here comes the WOO Warning, your home is always evolving – spiritually and energetically. I know! It’s a little out there but hear me out. As we clamber for a calmer, connectedness, and simpler and more self-aware approach, it’s easy to see why Holistic Interior Design is rising in popularity. Other alternative modalities such as color therapy, meditation, crystals, and Feng Shui to name a few are becoming more mainstream.
When you feel positivity in a space, it’s very likely that the energy field is balanced. You’re creating a positive environment that makes you feel comfortable and happy. You get positive vibes as a combination of good energy flow, proper Feng Shui, a cohesive color palette, and several other factors. When the energy field in a room becomes unbalanced, it can manifest physical illness.
Where To Start To Create A Holistic Home?
Well, it starts with you. As Marie Kondo said, “The space for which we live should be for the person we are becoming now. Not for the person we were in the past.” Your house is a direct reflection of who you think you are, your beliefs, and your feelings. And no, it’s not too late to re-align and re-design your home to be a genuine reflection of you.
3 Common Misconceptions To Holistic Interior Design
Misconception #1: Holistic interior design is just another fancy buzzword to describe interior design.
In 2022, there is no “buzz” or “hype” in putting the physical and mental well-being of you and your family above all else. In the last two years, our lives have changed beyond measure. If anything, it means that now we have to start putting our health and well-being above all else. This starts not just within ourselves and our bodies, but within our homes. Where in the past, we might have compromised on these aspects, now, there is no compromise. Whether you choose to incorporate holistic interior design principles within your home yourself or hire a professional holistic interior designer, holistic interior design is here to stay.
Misconception #2: Holistic interior design is just another new-age way of filling homes with Buddha effigies and crystals
So you know I love crystals but I do not own a single Buddha effigy. Remember the definition of Holistic Interior Design? “Holistic interior design considers and creates for the whole person (mind, body, spirit), rather than the space’s form and function alone.” So if crystals and buddha effigies do not resonate with you, there is no reason why they should be in your home at all. Although, I do encourage plants – not only for air quality but also for aesthetics and maybe, a meditation pillow. Just a thought for you to ponder.
Misconception #3: Holistic interior design is just Feng Shui in disguise!
Actually, believe it or not, Feng Shui came in first. I am actually still learning about the ancient Chinese ancient traditions and practices of Feng Shui. “Feng Shui For The Soul” by Denise Linn was recommended to me to start learning about it. I love the concept so far and look forward to sharing more here!
In Conclusion,
We are pivoting to a time when we want more from our homes. They must not only look beautiful but they must also support our physical, emotional, and mental health and overall well-being. The holistic home design approach means looking at the whole home – the environment and the people that live there. It means spending less time concerned with trends and beautiful objects, and more time considering how interior design will impact our mental and physical well-being, along with our comfort and productivity. It means getting intentional and trusting the process of creating a home all while making memories along the way.
