The Shades Of The Fall Season
Can you believe these beautiful Fall Colors – the gold, mulberry, dark green, maroon, and chocolate brown? I can feel the Fall season creeping in. It’s the cozy vibes, sweaters, textured knits, and the crunch of the leaves. I am starting to light candles more often. I am beginning to hope for crispness and a little chill in the air. I’m craving a pumpkin scone and gravitating toward thriller books and movies more than before. It’s enchanting! And while I know it can be tempting to consider the kitschy autumn decor, trust me when I say that thoughtful holiday decorating choices will elevate your space. It will also allow you to use your decor for years to come. So today I’m sharing how to tastefully decorate for fall. I’m bringing you the fall decorating inspiration you need to make your home classic and cozy for the autumn season!
The Accents of The Fall Season
As we head into the Fall and even, Winter seasons, the secret to tastefully decorating for fall is using colors and items that are already found in nature and reflect the season. It’s all about earthy tones and natural materials like pinecones, wheat, wicker, and greenery. By all means, use a fall color palette that appeals to you, like the one above as a guideline for when you’re shopping for your decor. For example, most pumpkins are orange, but if you’ll think about it, it’s a saturated orange, not a bright neon orange. Fall florals, foliage, and dried greenery can also instantly transform a corner inside your home.
When in doubt, layer pumpkins. I often run to our local grocery store for festive pumpkins and gourds. I also wholeheartedly believe in artificial pumpkins too. I’d recommend stacking them on top of one another for added visual interest and dimension. An assortment of pumpkins in a range of hues is a fail-safe way to transition your home for the fall season. You can place them on your kitchen island or countertops, bookshelf, mantel, or coffee table for a fun and festive look.
Keep The Fall Season Accents Simple
How to tastefully decorate for fall is all about the accents and keeping it clean & simple. Trust me when I say, less is more. I love to layer pillows, throws, and textures – all of which can be updated from season to season. I’d recommend starting with a base of neutral throw pillows and adding one or two patterned styles of blankets or pillows in warm hues that embody the season.
Also, I use candles to create a warm glow and an intimate atmosphere. I’m obsessed with this one from Studio McGee right now! I also love to incorporate styling touches like bowls filled with fall fruits or vegetables or pinecones which are perfect for the kitchen or dining areas. I love that these can also be used on a coffee table or side tables too! It’s also a great idea to add a few organic pieces from nature or pieces that have organic vibes. Using dried stems or dried flowers is a great way to add something organic to your home. The key is not to go overboard. I recommend trying to avoid fall throw pillows that have specific fall images on them, such as pumpkins, pickup trucks filled with pumpkins, etc. unless it’s done tastefully like the one pillow combination above.
Tasteful Fall Season Decorating Do’s & Don’ts
Here are some common fall decorating “do’s” and “don’ts” that will give you a home that’s tastefully decorated for fall. Styles change over the years and many of the things that gave a cozy vibe a few years ago just don’t work very well today. I recommend that you always do you!
Do exercise restraint.
Remember, Tastefully decorating fall is all about the accents and keeping it clean & simple. Switch out just a few of your everyday pieces with ones that represent fall with color or texture. Remember that decor items don’t have to be fall specific. For example, using bowls or trays made of wood will bring forth the feeling of fall in a room.
Do choose a color palette to stick with and use tones that are found in nature.
Layering pillows, throw blankets, and a decor item is a trick that designers use for tasteful decorating, no matter the season. If you’re unsure of how to layer, start with a base of neutral pillows then add pillows and throws in fall colors to the mix. It’s also fun to add a few pillows with a small pattern instead of only using solid-colored pillows. Plaids, stripes, and small prints are all good. The pattern can also come from the weave of the fabric, such as the cable-knit sweater look pillow covers I’m using this year. Remember to incorporate plenty of texture to add that all-important interest and to exude a feeling of coziness. Think baskets, snuggly knit throw blankets, soft furs, and velvets.
Don’t Get Carried Away with a Fall Theme
Decorating for a season with a theme can take it from charming to kitschy if you aren’t careful. That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t use any of these items but rather that you should use them sparingly.
Don’t fill shelves or surfaces with lots of small items.
These items can include figurines, a plethora of pumpkins, or signs with quotes. Too much of a good thing just looks like clutter instead of beautiful decor.
In conclusion,
No matter what you choose to decorate your home with, remember that indulging in subtle expressions of fall will give the maximum, tastefully decorated effect! Do you have any tips on how to tastefully decorate for fall? Any design questions I can help answer? Drop a line in the comments below!
