The New Year comes with many shifts…
and whether or not you are the type to subscribe to the idea of resolutions or goals, there’s something special about setting intentions and looking forward to what’s ahead for the new year. When it comes to the interior design space, the new year is often filled with debate about what’s “in” and “out”. Design trends offer a chance to reflect on what we may want out of the new calendar year.
I share mixed feelings about the idea of design trends, but the truth is, that our homes are ever-evolving and often a reflection of what is happening around us. I think it’s a great chance to take a look at how to revamp a space. It’s always fun to watch how the patterns of material, form, and influences ebb and flow from year to year, and I’m excited to share a few things I can’t wait to incorporate more of in 2022.
The design pendulum is swinging back to traditionalism as we spend more and more time indoors and long for the feeling of comfort that timeless, warm elements bring to our spaces. This year, I’m encouraging the warm welcome of rich materials that bring depth to the home, and am so excited to see a resurgence of traditional details in everything from architecture to product design!
Here are a few design “trends” I’m anticipating this year:
Artisan and Vintage Pieces
The traditional home style is definitely having a moment again as it is the most common style to work within to create a natural, cozy environment. Consumers are looking for more furniture and decor pieces that are unique and inspiring to them. Artisan pieces are unique and always draw the attention of the viewer whereas vintage furniture and art are budget-friendly, have a ton of various textures, and create the warmth in our sanctuary that we call home.
Warmer material & color palettes
From terracotta to deep brown hues and warm natural stone and woods, I’m expecting to see warmer materials and color palettes come up in 2022. Because of all the uncertainty of the outside world these last few years, these warmer materials and color palettes are comforting and inviting, encouraging peace and rest within our homes. Even though the organic and rust-colored tons are typically associated with the fall and winter seasons, I anticipate that we will be seeing them having year-round staying power as we continue to create sanctuaries within our homes.
Natural & Cozy Materials
Since being confined to our homes, the only place that we all wanted to go was out in nature. Now we are being drawn to it even more as we look to create a natural and organic feel of nature within our homes. In fact, natural and cozy materials like cotton and linen, velvet and ceramics, and clay and brick are in high demand. Other preferred choices include clay, rattan, wool, and jute. Organic, or natural materials, can also inject a living space with warmth and bring in a sense of coziness. This is being seen in home decor, mostly in home decor in conjunction with the need for warmth in materials and color palettes.
Exaggerated proportions
Scale and proportion are what make a room warm and inviting. Scale refers to how an item relates to the size of the room versus proportion refers to the shape of an item and how it relates to other things in the room. Playing with scale is always a great way to keep things interesting in design. This year, I’m excited to see even more exaggerated proportions in everything from statement lighting to large pieces of wall decor. Even proportions in hard finishes like tile and hardware can feel exaggerated and draw the eye to every detail, giving any interior a custom charm.
Softened kitchen furnishings
I’m so excited about this trend and seeing more furniture-like builds and living-space-like decor in the kitchen this year. I already love softened kitchen color palettes that are more on the warmer side. I’ve started incorporating artwork in my kitchen designs. I’m going to work on incorporating lamps. I’m also going to work on incorporating other unexpected décor and finish elements to soften the hard lines of the cabinetry and appliances in order to elevate the kitchen. Think champagne brass and throw pillows on bar stools!
In conclusion on design trends,
they are just that. The question is what are you looking forward to incorporating into your space this year?
I’d love to know your thoughts in the comments!
