I will be the first to admit that I am difficult when it comes to putting up wall art. I want the perfect piece the first time on the right spot on the wall and if it doesn’t look right, I will immediately take it down. With so many art styles and imagery to choose from, it can be a little overwhelming finding that right piece but I’ve found Neutral Abstract art. Not only is it a popular décor trend that encompasses a wide range of imagery and styles, but abstracts can also add interest, color, and invigorating energy to any design. I now design my own collection of textured and non-textured abstract art that I sell on Etsy because of how much I love it!
How To Look At Neutral Art
I found abstract art during quarantine because I found that I loved the simplicity and had a desire for the intentionality of the simplistic brush strokes and color palettes. Like any piece of art, I ask myself what memories (places? people?) does this bring up for me? I try not to worry as much about what the artist was seeing or feeling at first if I’m buying a piece.
When I create a piece, I look at various inspiration pieces before I create an original. I find that I paint well when I don’t think or feel, I just do! My final question is what do I see and feel? Let the piece take on a story for you!
Next, I pay attention to what’s repeated. What’s layered? Where’s the balance? What do I think of the composition? Are the colors vibrating? Sit in the questions for a little while. What intangible emotions might be explored here? My advice: Don’t try to find an “answer.” You get to decide if this piece has any meaning or emotion to you.
I think of Neutral Abstract Art as a lived visual experience. Revisit it. What does this piece bring up for you today? That’s how I enjoy neutral abstract art for years on end!

How to Decorate with Neutral Abstract Art
Let it choose your color palette: Fall in love with a piece of abstract art and let it be “the thing” that you design around. Neutral art pieces are a great starting point for the paint colors, colors in the rug, the curtains, or throw pillows and bedding!
Let it accent your space: We love the tone on tone around here. But maybe you want something to really “pop” in your room. An abstract piece could be the splash of color you’re craving or the accent that catches your eye when you walk into a room. Art should be inspiring and intentional!
Let it set the tone: What’s the vibe of this room? Moody? Cozy? Serene? Romantic? Productive? Creative? Abstract art can help you tell the story of the room or space.
Let it fill in the gaps: Maybe you need a piece to tie it all together. A piece of abstract art might be just the thing that’s missing — the swath of color that makes the sofa make sense with the armchair. Or maybe it’s the glue that’s holding the gallery wall together.
Of course, the lovely thing about art is that it’s subjective. If you don’t like a piece of abstract art, think about why. Don’t worry about forcing a feeling of stress that you don’t “get it.” Let it be a mystery but also try not to rule it out either!
The “Perfect Final Touch”
There’s never been a better time to create an intentional home you love to be in. Neutral abstract art that is simplistic and intentional in its creation inspires this very mission. I hope that you’ll take a look at some of my pieces to accent your version of the simplicity of living intentionally at home but also check out these as well!
