Can you really change your life by decluttering? In a manner of speaking, yes!
Changing your life is a huge undertaking. That’s why most people say that they can’t, don’t want to, or make some other excuse to continue to live the way they do even if it is negative or toxic. We often go through many life-changing experiences – getting married, having children, starting an entrepreneurial journey, or changing careers. Decluttering doesn’t make that list but afterward, you may say differently.
Decluttering doesn’t happen overnight.
I’m sorry for anyone whose bubble I just burst but as soon as we realize we want to get rid of all the “stuff” in our homes, we want to do this as soon as possible. It normally starts at the beginning of the year when everyone wants to freshen up their homes, then you start to notice how empty your house may seem when it’s really space you just made for other things that matter to you more, and then we go buy more stuff. It’s a vicious cycle.
The reason for this is that you might’ve made changes that look good on the outside, but you haven’t looked inwards. You haven’t looked at what will make those changes last.
The FIX?
Have a “why” before you even think about removing anything! Marie Kondo says to imagine your ideal lifestyle first. I like to think of it as, “What are you wanting to make room for in your life?” I’ve actually been gradually decluttering again and my why is that we are making room for time to spend with our dog children. I also want to be able to devote more time to you my readers rather than cleaning knickknacks and cracked/broken things we have had since before college. It’s time to make that decision! “What are you wanting to make room for in your life?” Go in with a plan! That’s how life-changing decluttering can be!
A System for Decluttering:
- Make a list of all the rooms in your house.
- Under each room, Label the function that it will serve as (Office, Main Living Room, Master Bedroom) then make a list of only the essential items that will go in that room.
- Declutter anything that doesn’t fulfill its purpose and as Marie Kondo says, Spark Joy! Then, add anything that will serve as its function
- Focus on one room at a time! (I really don’t like Marie Kondo’s method of focusing on categories as I think you get lost in the items themselves, this way you can see the room shrink as you pare down, re-home, repurpose and purchase items that will polish the room and make it a happy place!)

Your tips on how to start a system for decluttering were really impressive to read about.
